What is Guru Poornima?

Guru Poornima is a sacred festival dedicated to expressing reverence and gratitude to the Guru—the spiritual teacher and guide who leads us from darkness (ignorance) to light (knowledge and realization). Celebrated on the full moon day (Poornima) of the Ashadha month, this day is spiritually significant across India, Nepal, and among Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain communities worldwide.

Why is Guru Poornima Celebrated?

In the Hindu tradition, the Guru holds a position even higher than God, as described in the verse:

गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः।
गुरुः साक्षात् परब्रह्म तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः॥

This day also marks the birth anniversary of Veda Vyasa, the sage who compiled the Vedas and authored the Mahabharata. Therefore, it is also called Vyasa Poornima.
