Makara Sankranti – Significance, Spirituality & Sacred Traditions
Makara Sankranti is one of the most auspicious and spiritually significant festivals in Sanatana Dharma. It marks the sacred transition of the Sun into Makara Rashi (Capricorn) and the beginning of Uttarayana, the divine northward journey of the Sun. This celestial movement symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and positivity over negativity. Unlike most Hindu festivals that follow the lunar calendar, Makara Sankranti is determined by the solar movement and is dedicated to Surya Bhagavan, the source of life, energy, and consciousness.
The Vedas glorify the Sun as the very soul of the universe:

Long ago, when the rhythm of dharma trembled under the weight of arrogance,
Was born a mighty asura — Narakasura, son of Bhudevi and Lord Varaha.
Blessed with power, beauty, and divine parentage,
He was meant to protect the Earth — but pride turned his heart to stone.Seeking invincibility, he performed fierce penance to Lord Brahma,
And with folded hands, asked a boon:“May I die only by the hands of my mother.”
Brahma, the granter of destiny, smiled gently and said,

As the last rays of the setting sun touch the horizon, homes across India come alive. Lamps flicker, rangolis bloom at the doorstep, and the fragrance of sweets fills the air. The sound of laughter, bells, and chants mingle — it is the season of Diwali, the Festival of Lights — a celebration that glows not just in homes, but in hearts.
But beyond the sparkle and sweets lies a timeless story — one of faith, victory, and light’s eternal triumph over darkness.
Day 1 — Dhanteras: The Spark of Prosperity
It all begins with Dhanteras, the day when the earth itself is said to awaken to the sound of abundance. Legend says that on this day,

In the ancient city of Bhogavati, there ruled a mighty yet arrogant king named Narakasura. Born to Bhudevi (Mother Earth) and Lord Varaha, he possessed immense power and divine blessings. But over time, pride poisoned his heart.
He conquered vast kingdoms, challenged the Devas, and imprisoned thousands. His cruelty knew no bounds — he even stole the Kundalas (earrings) of Aditi, the mother of the gods. But his greatest sin was his treatment of women: Narakasura captured 16,000 princesses and celestial maidens, holding them captive in his palace, intending to force them into marriage.

What is Guru Poornima?
Guru Poornima is a sacred festival dedicated to expressing reverence and gratitude to the Guru—the spiritual teacher and guide who leads us from darkness (ignorance) to light (knowledge and realization). Celebrated on the full moon day (Poornima) of the Ashadha month, this day is spiritually significant across India, Nepal, and among Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain communities worldwide.
Why is Guru Poornima Celebrated?
In the Hindu tradition, the Guru holds a position even higher than God, as described in the verse:
This day also marks the birth anniversary of Veda Vyasa, the sage who compiled the Vedas and authored the Mahabharata. Therefore, it is also called Vyasa Poornima.
