Aksharabhyasa, also called Vidyarambha in North India and Ezhuthiniruthu in Kerala, is the Vedic samskara in which a child writes their first letter, formally inaugurating a lifelong journey of learning. Traditionally performed between ages 3 and 5, the child writes "Om Namah Siddham" (South) or "Hari Shri" (Kerala / North) in a plate of rice while the guru / father guides their hand.
