About Devatha Pratishtapana

Devatha Pratishtapana is the Vedic ritual by which a newly acquired deity idol or photo, whether for a home altar, family temple, or community shrine, is formally consecrated and infused with divine presence. The ritual includes Mukha-Ayata (facial direction setting), Netra Unmilana (eye-opening with gold needle), Prana Pratishta (life-force installation), and deity-specific homa. Without Pratishtapana, an idol remains inert stone or metal; with it, the deity is invited to reside within. Essential whenever you bring home a new Ganesha, Lakshmi, Shiva Lingam, or any ishta-devata.

📅 When to perform

Most auspicious on the deity's ishta-day, Wednesday for Ganesh, Friday for Lakshmi-Devi, Monday for Shiva, Tuesday for Hanuman-Subramanya, Saturday for Shani, Thursday for Dakshinamurti-Brihaspati. Shukla Paksha, Ekadashi, purnima, Akshaya Tritiya, and Uttara Phalguni nakshatra are all excellent.

Frequently asked questions

I brought a new Ganesha idol home, do I need Pratishtapana?

Yes, strongly recommended. Without Prana Pratishta, the idol is spiritually inert. With it, your daily worship yields full phala. This is a 3-hour ritual done on a Wednesday or Ganesha-chaturthi.

Does a photo or framed image need Pratishtapana?

Yes, traditionally. Even a framed deity photo benefits from a shortened Prana Pratishta. It takes only 1–2 hours.

Our family Shiva Lingam is 20 years old, has it "expired"?

Not exactly, but if regular worship has lapsed or major events like relocation have happened, a Punah Pratishta (re-consecration) refreshes the divine charge. Recommended every 12 years or after major disruptions.

Can you install Navagraha idols for our private temple?

Yes. Navagraha Pratishta is a common request for family temples. All 9 graha murtis are installed together with directional placement and per-planet archana.
